Information for Patients

This portion of the site is designed to include information for patients who are Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing. It includes information on video resources as well as programs designed to increase access within the Health Care system. To suggest a resource to be included, please submit it on this form.

Useful Links

This web site features video and information from Carolyn Stern, MD, a board certified family practitioner who was born deaf. For patients, it includes a video dictionary with Dr. Stern giving ASL explanations of a variety of medical and health topics. People can also submit questions to Dr. Stern for a personalized response. As well, it has an extensive page of resources.

A new resource for Deaf patient with video descriptions of illnesses and treatments. This site is the result of a wide variety of collaborators. Check it out.

Information about Gastronenterology Procedures

This features video from the CD-ROM, Internal Discussions: An Appointment in Gastroenterology. It has a captioned version of Mary Jane Harrington, RN, describing two common procedures: an EGD (esophogastroduodenocsopy) and a colonoscopy. Then it has ASL interpretations of this talk by a staff medical interpreter and a Deaf interpreter familiar with the digestive system. There are also some web links for more information related to these procedures.

Minnesota Health Educator Wins National Award

Anita Buel

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation presented Anita Buel with the 2008 Community Health Leaders Award for creating a network of State-Certified Deaf Residents that helps thousands of Deaf Minnesotans comprehend and improve their health.
