For interpreters working in healthcare settings making ethical decisions is a critical skill. When working in medical or mental health settings, interpreters are often faced with dilemmas to which they must respond as effectively as possible quickly.
Using an approach based on ethical decison-making models articulated by Dean and Pollard as well as Stewart and Witter-Merithew, participants will have the opportunity to analyze case studies and develop responses based on the values of the interpreting profession. Participants will also work in cadres to develop case studies of their own as they apply their ethical decision making skills.
Demonstrate personal philosophy of ethical decision making in health care settings and how it relates to perspectives of professional interpreting
Identify challenges for maintaining healthy boundaries
Contrast deontological and teleological approaches to ethical decision making
Apply ethical decision making framework to case study, articulate reasoning and identify potential consequences
