Translating Written English Texts into American Sign Language for Deaf and Hearing Interpreters

The following is sample video from the DVD, When the Law Meets Medicine: Translating Written English Texts into American Sign Langauge for Deaf and Hearing Interpreters . (Video requires QuickTime - free download.) This DVD gives interpreters - both Deaf and hearing - the chance to practice translating texts used in the actual admission process for Fairview Health Services. Created by Doug Bowen-Bailey and Trudy Suggs, the disk contains translation created by Trudy for Fairview, reflections on the translation process, and suggestions for how to create your own translations. An accompanying study packet has written English translations of all the ASL texts on the DVD as well as the original source texts. (April 2007)

The four texts translated on the DVD are :

  • Notice to Patients
  • Information on Advance Health Care Directives
  • Minnesota Patients' Bill of Rights
  • Notice of Privacy Practices
