An English Translation of
Reflections on Interpreting this Appointment

Reflecting on the appointment in cardiology, it was extremely realistic - very similar to the type of interaction I have in my regular work in medical settings. The participants were overlapping each other in their comments. There were times when there was confusion and the need for explanation and clarification. I am just glad that the camera was able to catch what happens in this type of appointment. It is really worth looking more closely at this type of interaction.

I also noticed.. it was good to have two Deaf people at the appointment. This frequently happens, whether a mother with her daughter, or a husband and wife. I noticed in this appointment that Anna, the wife, was happy to provide some clarification at points to make sure there were no misunderstandings.

One issue that I noticed related to the signs I chose for conveying the concept of an artery being closed. I originally signed it with classifiers that looked as if the walls of the vessel were pushed together so it was flattened. In actuality, it would be better to maintain a classifier for a tubular shape with a ball in the middle of it showing that it was blocked. Because of this choice, it took some time to clarify the concept during the appointment and would be something that I would do differently given another chance.
