An English Transcript of
The Appointment: An ASL-English Interpretation

Note that the transcript represents the ASL to English interpretation, rather than attempting a transcription of the ASL source. A possible activity could be to use the this transcript to compare to the source and see more specifi-cally what choices Nancy used in creating this interpretation.

Dr: Hello Mr. Brown. Hello, Mrs. Brown. I'm Dr. Riendl, it's very good to meet you. What problem brought you here today?

Int: Really, I’ve been out of breath. I’ve noticed I’ve been doing a lot more sweating. I try to get to the bus and I can’t. I’m just so tired and my wife is extremely worried about me and has been nagging me to get in to see you. She’s very concerned about my health.

Dr: How long have you had this problem?

Int: Um, two, there weeks ago I started noticing that it was harder to breathe, that I started sweating, and that’s when she, uh, kept saying come on in for the appointment. So here I am.

Dr: Okay, you mentioned shortness of breath trying to catch the bus in the morning. Are you short of breath walking on the level?

Int: Yeah. Dr: (Overlap) About how far?  Int: Probably, two, three blocks.

Dr: Okay. What about stairs? Is that difficult for you?

Int: Oh yes. I feel like I’m holding on to the railing as I’m going up. And I’m going slowly.

Dr: Okay. What’s your occupation?

Int: I work at Honeywell, and I’m a janitor.

Dr: Are there any activities that you have difficulty with at work?

Int: What’s hard is the mopping that I have to do. I notice that I get short of breath when I’m mopping, and I try to take breaks. But maybe, I’m just overweight. I don’t know.
